Morocco is advancing plans to expand offshore wind energy production to enhance renewable energy capabilities, according to Moroccan media citing the Spanish news outlet El Economista. The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) is reportedly planning the country's first offshore wind farm, located off the coast of Essaouira.
This project is supported by a MAD 20.6 million (around USD 2.1 million) grant from the European Investment Bank (EIB), marking a key milestone in Morocco's renewable energy program. The contract, valued at two million euros, will run for two years.
According to the World Bank, Morocco has an offshore wind capacity of around 200 gigawatts (GW), with 22 GW particularly suitable for fixed-bottom turbines. Studies highlight the Atlantic coast’s favorable conditions, including high wind speeds and shallow waters, making it ideal for offshore wind farms.
