Morocco has announced a $9.6 billion investment to transform its railway infrastructure, aiming to enhance connectivity, boost economic growth, and promote sustainability, Newsweek reports. Transport Minister Abdessamad Kayouh revealed the ambitious plan during a parliamentary session in Rabat, marking a significant step toward the country’s 2040 rail strategy.

The project includes constructing a high-speed line from Kenitra to Marrakech, purchasing 18 high-speed trains, and upgrading 40 railway stations. By 2040, Morocco aims to expand rail coverage from 51% to 87% of the population, connecting 43 cities, 12 international airports, and 12 ports.

This initiative is closely tied to the kingdom’s preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Economic projections estimate 300,000 jobs during the implementation phase, with the network expected to serve 57 million passengers and generate $500 million in revenue by 2025.

The rail plan is a cornerstone of Morocco’s vision to modernize its logistics and drive regional trade.
