After years of severe drought, Morocco has recently experienced a surge in rainfall, offering temporary relief to its agricultural sector. However, a new report from the Middle East Institute cautions that long-term water challenges remain a serious threat.
The report asserts that between late February and late March 2025, Morocco received 43.5 millimeters of rainfall—over 130% above the seasonal average. The precipitation, including snowfall in mountainous areas, has increased inflows into the country’s reservoirs. Still, water storage levels remain low, at just 37% of capacity.
While the rainfall has eased some immediate pressure on agriculture—an industry that contributes roughly one-sixth of Morocco’s GDP—the report stresses that the benefits are short-lived. The country remains highly vulnerable to recurring droughts, posing a continued risk to food security.
The report calls for long-term solutions to water scarcity that move beyond reliance on seasonal rain. It urges investment in sustainable water management, expanded irrigation infrastructure, and robust climate adaptation strategies to build resilience in the sector.
