At the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Sochi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered a message from President Vladimir Putin, pledging "total support" for Africa across various sectors, according to the BBC.

The announcement resonated with several African officials, some of whom have increasingly relied on Russian military assistance to combat Islamic extremism and terrorism.

Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, emphasized his country's desire for stronger economic ties with Moscow.

“Russian companies are collaborating with the Malian government and private partners to address the challenges faced by the Malian people,” he stated.

This shift toward Russia comes amid waning U.S. influence on the continent. Several former French colonies have called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops, leaning instead toward closer partnerships with Russia and China.

Russia’s support often comes with fewer demands regarding human rights or domestic policies, focusing primarily on access to natural resources. Beyond economic gains, Moscow seeks to strengthen its alliances with the global south as a countermeasure against U.S. efforts to isolate Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
