The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, operated by BP and Kosmos Energy, has begun production offshore Senegal and Mauritania. Gas is now flowing from wells to a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, and liquefaction has started, according to the trade publication OilPrice.com. The first LNG cargo is expected in the first quarter of 2025.

Phase 1 of the project will produce 2.3 million tons of LNG annually, positioning Senegal and Mauritania as key players in the global LNG market. The development, originally set for 2023, faced delays but is now expected to supply international markets, particularly as Europe seeks alternative gas sources.

BP Gas Marketing Ltd. has been notified to send an LNG carrier for export later this quarter. Alongside the Sangomar oil project, GTA is expected to drive economic growth in Senegal and Mauritania, reinforcing West Africa’s role in global energy supply for decades to come.
