Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye urged greater European support for Sahel stability during a visit by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to West Africa on Thursday. The Sahel, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, faces ongoing jihadist violence and is now governed by military juntas following coups since 2020. These regimes have distanced themselves from the West, leaving ECOWAS to form their own confederation.
