South Africa has firmly opposed Morocco’s potential BRICS membership, citing concerns over its influence within the bloc. The three-day summit gathered leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss expansion and other global issues. Bloomberg reports that South African officials have expressed strong opposition to including Morocco or Nigeria. The stance is tied to tensions between South Africa and Morocco over the Western Sahara dispute, a longstanding source of friction.
