Spain faces backlash over €2.5 million aid package to Morocco

Spain’s decision to allocate €2.5 million in aid to Morocco — aimed at curbing irregular migration to Europe — has sparked heated debate in the Spanish Parliament, according to Hespress. The strongest opposition reportedly comes from the right-wing Vox party, led by Santiago Abascal.

Abascal has questioned why Spain is providing financial support to Morocco, pointing to Morocco’s significant defense budget and its recent €4 billion purchase of Apache helicopters.

The aid package, managed by the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP), funds the purchase of 183 motorcycles, 33 vehicles, and other equipment such as thermal cameras, boats, and off-road vehicles. This equipment is intended to help Moroccan authorities patrol remote coastal and mountainous regions.

In response to the criticism, the Spanish government defended the aid, stressing the importance of maintaining strong ties with Morocco. Officials emphasized that the partnership is built on shared interests, particularly in tackling global challenges like human trafficking and irregular migration.
