Jailed Tunisian political leader faces death penalty; lawyers appeal charges

Tunisian rights activist Sihem Bensedrine, who led a body investigating abuses under past autocratic rulers, has been arrested for allegedly falsifying the commission's 2020 report, Tunisian media reported, according to AFP. Bensedrine, who headed the Truth and Dignity Commission (IVD), is accused of accepting a bribe to include a passage accusing the Franco-Tunisian Bank of corruption, allegations she denies.
Last year, a court banned Bensedrine from leaving Tunisia amid the investigation. The IVD, founded in 2014 after the 2011 revolution that ousted dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, collected testimonies from tens of thousands of victims of abuses, including rape and torture.
Since President Kais Saied's power grab in 2021, authorities have arrested numerous critics of the regime. Rights groups have condemned the arrests as signs of an "authoritarian drift" and a "rollback" on freedoms as Tunisia prepares for presidential elections on October 6.
