Tunisian lawmakers have rejected rumours of a draft law to legalise polygamy, dismissing claims that the move could overturn the country’s seven-decade ban. Circulating since late November, the rumour alleged parliament was drafting a decree aligning with President Kais Saied’s conservative policies, challenging the 1956 Personal Status Code. Introduced by President Habib Bourguiba, the Code banned polygamy and positioned Tunisia as a regional leader in women’s rights. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to the law.
