Tunisian opposition trial resumes, six on hunger strike

The trial of about 40 Tunisian opposition figures resumed on Tuesday under tight security, with six detained defendants on hunger strike after being barred from appearing in court. The defendants – including politicians, lawyers and journalists critical of President Kais Saied – face charges of plotting against state security and belonging to a terrorist group. Rights groups have warned of shrinking freedoms since Saied’s 2021 power grab, which followed his 2019 election.
