Tunisian presidential candidate sentenced to 20 months vows to campaign from prison

A Tunisian court has sentenced Ayachi Zammel, one of the challengers to President Kais Saied in next month’s presidential election, to 20 months in prison on fraud charges, his lawyer said Wednesday, condemning the ruling as politically motivated. Zammel was convicted of falsifying signatures for his candidacy papers in the city of Jendouba, just two weeks after his arrest. The opposition figure faces over 20 additional charges across Tunisia, with four cases set to be heard on Thursday.
