Newly confirmed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks during a swearing-in ceremony at the Vice President’s ceremonial office at Eisenhower Executive Office Building January 21, 2025 in Washington, DC.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Wednesday of the critical need to prevent Hamas from governing Gaza. This dialogue followed President Trump’s controversial proposal suggesting that Egypt and Jordan should absorb more Palestinians from Gaza. Trump’s comments came amidst his idea to "clean out" Gaza, sparking fears among Palestinians of potential permanent displacement due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by Israel's extensive military actions in the region.
