Up to five members of the UK’s Special Boat Service (SBS) are being investigated for their involvement in an incident in Libya two years ago, according to various UK media outlets.

The investigation focuses on a car chase during which shots were fired, leading to the death of a suspected terrorist. The SBS troops, who are traditionally drawn from the Royal Marines, could potentially face murder charges, the Daily Mail reports.

The UK’s Defence Serious Crimes Unit launched the inquiry following allegations that the suspect might have been apprehended rather than fatally shot. So far, no formal charges have been filed, according to the BBC.

UK special forces are believed to have been in Libya when NATO launched airstrikes against forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. This investigation confirms their presence in the region in recent years.

The scrutiny of UK special forces has intensified in recent weeks. Last week, it was revealed that nine members of the elite unit might face war crimes charges for their actions in Syria.
