The United Nations has appointed Hanna Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana as its new special envoy to Libya, AFP reports. He replaces Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who stepped down in April. Tetteh, a former Ghanaian foreign minister and the UN’s special representative to the Horn of Africa, becomes the 10th envoy to Libya since 2011.

Her appointment, pending UN Security Council approval, comes as Libya remains deeply divided following the 2011 overthrow of dictator Moamer Kadhafi. The country has since faced ongoing political chaos and conflict.

The post had been vacant since Bathily’s surprise departure, during which he cited a lack of “political will and good faith” among Libyan leaders. As head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Tetteh will confront the challenge of navigating Libya’s fractured political landscape in hopes of fostering stability and peace.
