The UN Security Council on Thursday urged a "realistic" political solution for Western Sahara, extending the UN mission there for another year. A US-backed resolution renewed MINURSO's mandate, or the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, through October 31, 2025, passing with 12 votes in favor. Algeria, after submitting two failed amendments, abstained in protest, while Russia and Mozambique also abstained. The council highlighted MINURSO's strategic focus in the former Spanish colony.
