Tensions rise in EU Algeria trade dispute following Spain policy shift

The European Union has taken action to address trade restrictions imposed by Algeria, accusing the North African country of violating a long-standing agreement. 

This move comes after a recent shift in Spanish foreign policy regarding the contested Moroccan Sahara territory.

At the heart of the issue are eight trade measures Algeria enacted since 2021. These include a ban on imports of marble and ceramic products, a key Spanish export to Algeria.
