Wrong crescent: Flag mistake lands four Tunisians in jail

Four Tunisians were arrested after the Turkish flag, which resembles Tunisia's but is not identical, was mistakenly raised over the headquarters of Tunisia's national railway company, SNCFT, AFP reports citing local media. Both flags share the same red and white colors and feature the Islamic symbols of a crescent and star, but the Tunisian flag includes a white circle, distinguishing it from Turkey's.

The mistake, captured on video and circulated online, prompted a swift apology from SNCFT, which explained that the Turkish flag had been purchased in error and raised without staff noticing the difference. The company removed the flag and launched an investigation. Social media criticism followed, leading to the arrest of four railway workers.

The media did not disclose details about the arrested individuals or the charges they face. This comes after a similar flag-related incident in May, when three officials were arrested for covering Tunisia’s national flag during a sporting event.
