Russia’s uneven relationship with the Maghreb
Last weekend, after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, a Russian cargo plane departed from Russia's air base
Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, the Interior Minister of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, has expressed his willingness to cooperate with Algeria in its efforts to support Gaza, according to a report from Middle East Monitor. Al-Houthi commended Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his “important, ideal, and wonderful statements.” On Sunday, Tebboune announced that Algeria’s military was prepared to enter Gaza to assist the Palestinians if Egypt allowed access through its borders.
“Our army is ready as soon as the Rafah crossing is opened… we will establish three hospitals within 20 days,” Tebboune declared.
Yemen’s Supreme Political Council, which emerged following the Houthi takeover of the Yemeni government in 2015, has been widely criticized for undermining the Yemeni peace process and lacks international recognition, with Iran being a notable exception as a supporter of the Houthis.
Houthi-aligned forces have been targeting ships in the Red Sea as a protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Algeria, recognized for its staunch support of the Palestinian cause, has pledged military, medical, and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The situation develops as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warns of the potential for a broader regional conflict.
