Mauritania's Union des forces du progrès has warned that increasing use of the judiciary to suppress free expression and discourage criticism could have serious consequences for public freedoms, as political tensions rise ahead of a possible constitutional change.
The opposition party Union des forces du progrès (UFP) has issued a warning over what it describes as a deteriorating climate for civil liberties in Mauritania. The party argues that the growing use of judicial measures to stifle freedom of expression and deter those who expose abuses poses significant risks to public freedoms.
The statement followed a regular meeting of the UFP executive bureau, where members discussed national, regional, and international developments, as well as internal political and organisational matters.
Concerns Over Constitutional Change
The UFP also condemned ongoing efforts to promote constitutional amendments that would allow a third presidential term. According to the party, such initiatives threaten national stability and could undermine the credibility of upcoming political dialogue.
Party Plans Extraordinary Congress
At the conclusion of its session, the UFP executive bureau approved plans to hold a party congress after the next Ramadan, with an extraordinary session scheduled for late December to prepare for the event.
