Fact-Checking Policy

How Maghreb Insider verifies material factual claims, evaluates source quality, handles uncertainty and reviews information before and after publication.

Maghreb Insider aims to verify material factual claims before publication using sources appropriate to the subject and the significance of the claim.

Verification is intended to distinguish supported facts from allegations, interpretation, forecasts and information that remains incomplete or disputed.

What We Check

  • Names, roles and organizations;
  • Dates and timelines;
  • Locations and geographic descriptions;
  • Statistics, rankings and numerical claims;
  • Company and project information;
  • Quotations and attribution;
  • Government and institutional statements;
  • Legal and regulatory claims;
  • Security, migration and political claims;
  • Charts, maps, screenshots and data sources;
  • Links to supporting documentation.

The level of checking required depends on the nature of the claim, the quality of the available evidence and the consequences of presenting uncertain information as established fact.

Source Hierarchy

Primary documentation is preferred where available and appropriate. This may include government documents, public records, company filings, official datasets, regulatory material and institutional publications.

Secondary reporting, academic research, specialist publications and expert commentary may be used for confirmation, interpretation and context.

A source is evaluated according to what it can reliably establish. An official announcement can verify that an announcement was made while still requiring additional evidence for broader claims contained within it.

Verification Workflow

  1. Identify the principal factual claims that the article depends on.
  2. Locate appropriate primary or authoritative sources where possible.
  3. Check names, dates, figures, quotations and links against the material supporting them.
  4. Separate verified facts from allegations, forecasts and interpretation.
  5. Apply additional review to sensitive or disputed claims where weak sourcing could materially mislead readers.
  6. Review the headline and summary against the evidence so they do not overstate what has been established.
  7. Make the final publication decision under human editorial responsibility.

Interested Sources

Governments, companies, political actors and other interested parties may provide useful information, but their claims are evaluated according to the available evidence.

An official statement is not automatically independent verification of the statement's underlying claims. The interests, role and access of the source may be relevant to how the information is presented.

Anonymous Sources

Maghreb Insider rarely relies on unnamed sources. Anonymous-source claims should be corroborated wherever reasonably possible, particularly when allegations are sensitive or reputationally significant.

Uncertainty

Where reliable information remains incomplete, disputed or provisional, the article should communicate that uncertainty rather than present an assumption as established fact.

This can be especially important in developing political, security, corporate or infrastructure stories where early accounts may change as additional records or statements become available.

AI and Verification

AI systems are not treated as authoritative sources. Maghreb Insider does not currently use AI as the primary system for article drafting, translation, summaries or source monitoring.

AI must not fabricate evidence, documents, quotations, people, events, statistics or credentials.

After Publication

New information may require an article to be updated, clarified or corrected. Post-publication review is therefore part of maintaining accurate continuing coverage rather than an indication that every earlier version was necessarily wrong.

Verified factual errors are handled under the Corrections Policy.
