Maghreb Insider publishes independent news, analysis and regional intelligence about North Africa, the Maghreb and the Sahel. This policy explains the standards that guide our editorial work.
These standards are intended to help readers understand how editorial decisions are separated from commercial interests, how material claims are sourced and how uncertainty, disputes and errors are handled.
Editorial Independence
Editorial decisions are based on relevance, evidence, source quality, public interest and reader value.
Advertisers, commercial partners, governments, companies and other interested parties do not control independent editorial conclusions.
Editorial staff must not promise favorable reporting, a positive editorial conclusion, a higher ranking or preferential treatment in exchange for payment, access or another benefit.
Sourcing Standards
Maghreb Insider prefers primary and attributable sources where reasonably possible.
Sources may include:
- Government and institutional documents;
- Public records and regulatory material;
- Company filings and disclosures;
- Official statistics and datasets;
- International institutions;
- Academic and specialist research;
- Direct statements from relevant people and organizations;
- Credible secondary reporting where useful for context or verification.
Official statements establish what an institution or person has said; they do not automatically verify every underlying claim. Source authority should be evaluated in relation to the specific information being reported.
Unnamed Sources
Maghreb Insider rarely uses anonymous or unnamed sources. Named and on-the-record sourcing is preferred because it gives readers more information with which to judge credibility and potential interests.
An unnamed source may be considered only when the responsible editor knows the source's identity and basis of knowledge, the information is important, and the information cannot reasonably be obtained on the record.
Sensitive allegations should not normally depend on a single anonymous source without additional corroboration.
Verification
Material facts should be checked against appropriate evidence before publication.
Depending on the article, this may include checking:
- Names, dates and official roles;
- Statistics and financial figures;
- Quotations and attribution;
- Project status;
- Company and institutional information;
- Legal or regulatory statements;
- Maps, charts and source links;
- Claims made by interested parties.
Information that remains incomplete, uncertain or disputed should be described accordingly rather than presented with greater certainty than the available evidence supports.
Fairness and Context
Maghreb Insider aims to represent relevant claims accurately and avoid misleading quotation or unnecessary omission of important context.
Serious factual allegations about identifiable people, companies or institutions may require an opportunity for relevant response where practical.
Fairness does not require treating unsupported claims as equivalent to well-supported evidence. It requires accurately representing material evidence, relevant disagreement and the status of disputed information.
Content Labels
Where relevant, Maghreb Insider may identify content as News, Analysis, Explainer, Guide, Ranking, Methodology, Opinion, Interview or another appropriate editorial format.
These labels help readers understand whether a piece primarily reports new facts, interprets developments, explains background, presents a methodology or expresses an attributed viewpoint.
Sponsored content is not currently an active standard publishing format. If introduced, commercial content should be clearly labeled and distinguishable from independent editorial material.
Rankings and Comparisons
Data-based rankings and comparisons should use a reasonable and disclosed methodology where the criteria materially affect the result.
Paid visibility does not determine editorial ranking position.
Advertisers or commercial partners cannot purchase a higher independent ranking, favorable score or predetermined editorial recommendation.
AI Use
Maghreb Insider uses AI-generated or AI-assisted imagery for illustration.
AI is not currently used as the primary system for article drafting, translation, summarization or source monitoring.
AI must not be used to fabricate sources, quotations, names, events, documents, statistics or credentials. AI-generated illustrations must not be presented as documentary photographs of events that did not occur.
Human editors remain responsible for publication decisions.
Corrections and Updates
Verified factual errors may be corrected. Material new information may be added as an update, and wording may be clarified where additional precision is required.
Correction requests can be sent to corrections@maghrebinsider.com.
Commercial Separation
Maghreb Insider plans to use advertising as part of its publishing model. Advertising expenditure does not determine independent editorial treatment.
Sponsored content is not currently an active standard publishing format. If introduced, it will be labeled and governed by the Sponsored Content Policy.
