Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Aldabaiba has instructed the National Oil Corporation (NOC) and the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) to implement immediate measures to stabilise electricity and fuel supplies, following a period of widespread power outages and public unrest.
The directive came during a meeting in Tripoli with NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman, where the two leaders reviewed the current state of gas and liquid fuel deliveries to power plants, assessed consumption rates, and discussed the actual needs of the grid. The session also examined the progress of fuel distribution across Libya's regions, with Aldabaiba emphasising the need for daily, direct coordination between the NOC and GECOL to address any shortages or emergencies affecting generation or distribution.
Government Responds to Public Pressure After Summer Blackouts
The government's intervention follows a summer marked by prolonged blackouts, violent protests, and attacks on state infrastructure, which have intensified calls for Aldabaiba's resignation. The Prime Minister is under mounting pressure to restore basic services and prevent further instability.
During the meeting, the NOC reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising fuel and gas supplies for power generation, aiming to support grid stability. The NOC Chairman reported that fuel supply operations for citizens remain regular, with no major obstacles, but urged the public to avoid congestion at fuel stations to ensure smooth distribution.
Joint Coordination Room and Daily Monitoring Introduced
To improve oversight, Aldabaiba ordered the creation of a joint coordination room involving all relevant authorities. This body will monitor daily allocations of fuel and gas to power plants, track the needs of the electricity grid, and intervene rapidly to resolve bottlenecks. Periodic reports on implementation and results will be submitted to the Prime Minister's office.
Aldabaiba reiterated that stabilising electricity and fuel supply is a top government priority, with daily monitoring to continue until tangible improvements are seen in supply reliability and grid performance. The government's ability to deliver on these measures will be closely watched as a test of its capacity to respond to public demands and maintain order.
