Tripoli University Hospital has announced the successful completion of an advanced laparoscopic repair of a congenital anterior diaphragmatic hernia, marking a significant step forward for minimally invasive surgery in Libya. The procedure, led by Professor Ali Al-Gallai and the Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery team within the Department of Oncology, Liver, and Pancreas Surgery, was performed without the need for open surgery. Laparoscopic, or keyhole, surgery involves operating through small incisions using a camera and specialised instruments, reducing trauma and recovery time for patients.
According to the hospital, the patient experienced an excellent recovery and was able to leave the hospital just 23 hours after the operation. This rapid discharge is seen as evidence of the effectiveness of advanced surgical techniques and the hospital's adherence to high standards of care and post-operative monitoring.
Healthcare Localisation and System Impact
The hospital's achievement is part of a broader policy by the Tripoli government to localise healthcare provision, aiming to reduce the need for Libyans to seek medical treatment abroad. By performing complex surgeries domestically, the hospital not only spares patients the inconvenience and expense of overseas travel but also reduces the financial burden on the state, which often subsidises treatment outside Libya.
