Egyptian authorities have contained a crude oil spill stretching three kilometres off Ras Badran near Abu Redis in South Sinai, after identifying and repairing a pipeline leak. Environmental monitoring and legal action are ongoing to assess damage and accountability.
Egypt's Ministry of Local Development and Environment announced that an oil spill off the coast of South Sinai has been contained following a leak from a crude oil production pipeline near Ras Badran, close to Abu Redis. The spill, which extended for approximately three kilometres and reached sections of the public beach, was detected by the Suez branch of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency.
Authorities responded by dispatching pollution-control teams and divers to the affected area, coordinating with South Sinai officials and other agencies. The source of the leak was traced to a specific point on the offshore pipeline, which was subsequently repaired by a specialised maintenance vessel operated by Petrobel. Inspections confirmed that the pipeline had been sealed and no further leakage was observed.
Environmental response and ongoing monitoring
Minister Manal Awad stated that clean-up operations are continuing, with teams collecting contaminated materials and monitoring water quality, shoreline conditions, and marine life. Laboratory testing and oil fingerprinting are underway to assess the environmental impact and confirm the source of the spill. Authorities have also partially halted some offshore production platforms as a precaution during the investigation and repair process.
Legal and regulatory consequences
The ministry indicated that legal action will be pursued against the party found responsible for the incident. Compensation and fines will be determined based on laboratory results, field inspections, and the final assessment of environmental damage. A comprehensive technical review of the pipeline has been ordered to identify the root cause and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Environmental teams will continue to monitor the area for any new traces of oil and assess potential impacts on nearby coastal facilities and tourist resorts.
