PortCastelló moved 14.9 million tons of cargo through September 2026, up 7.2% year on year. Morocco led general cargo while Turkey topped dry bulk.

Container traffic at the Port of Castellón climbed to more than 108,000 TEU in the first nine months of 2026, its strongest result in four years. The port handled 14,904,835 tons of cargo from January to September, up 7.2% year on year, according to figures reported by Economía 3. General cargo rose 48.7%. Container traffic increased 39%.

Liquid bulk made up 46.9% of total traffic. Dry bulk accounted for 43.7%, while general cargo represented 9.3%. The Port Authority of Castellón data were reported by Onda Cero on October 14.

Turkey remained PortCastelló's leading partner in overall international trade, with Morocco in second place. Brazil followed, then Angola and Romania, according to PortalPortuario. The leaders changed by cargo type: Morocco topped general cargo, while Turkey led dry bulk.

Morocco leads general cargo as Turkey tops dry bulk

Morocco ranked first among PortCastelló's general-cargo origin and destination countries. It handled 279,967 tons in the first nine months of 2026, up 79.3% from the same period in 2025. Turkey followed with 140,003 tons, an increase of 98.8%. Greece and Tunisia also ranked among the leading Mediterranean markets. Algeria completed the group.

Turkey was the main partner for dry bulk, handling more than 1.85 million tons from January to September, up 14.4%. Morocco followed with 1.1 million tons, a 20.1% rise. Romania's traffic grew 4.7%, while dry-bulk traffic overall increased 9.6%. The category supplies the ceramics industry in Castellón province.

Container gains and other cargo flows

Full-container traffic with Morocco grew 163.4%. The Turkish route rose 123.9%. Morocco and Turkey were among the leading countries by TEU, alongside Israel and Egypt.

The container surge was already clear in the first half of 2026. PortCastelló handled 76,563 TEU, up 43.6% from 53,306 TEU a year earlier. Total cargo reached 9,880,871 tons, an increase of 7.4%.

These figures cover cargo flows. Separately, earlier corridor coverage tracked the proposed SoutH2 Corridor, which remains at the planning and feasibility stage.

Angola and Kazakhstan lead liquid bulk

Angola and Kazakhstan were the leading partners in liquid bulk, the port's largest cargo category. Its volume edged down 0.4%. Brazil's traffic grew 53.49%, while Libya's increased 11.69%.

Major cargoes handled at the port included oil and feldspar, along with gasoline and cement. Other shipments included kaolin, fuel oil and mixed clay.

Port infrastructure and rail access were discussed at a technical meeting between provincial authorities and PortCastelló on October 12, 2026. The planned rail connection is part of the Mediterranean Corridor project, with total investment of €325 million. The Port Authority of Castellón is contributing €90 million, according to Las Provincias.
