The Algerian government has officially announced that Tuesday, 25 August 2026 will be observed as a paid public holiday across the country in recognition of Mawlid Ennabaoui Echarif, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Mohammed. The decision was communicated in a joint statement by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security and the Directorate General of Public Service and Administrative Reform.
This date corresponds to 12 Rabie El Aouel 1448 in the Islamic calendar. The holiday is established under Law No. 63-278 of 26 July 1963, which lists Algeria's official public holidays and confirms their paid status for employees.
Holiday Applies to All Sectors and Employment Types
The measure covers employees in both public and private sectors, including those working in institutions, administrations, public and private organisations, and enterprises, regardless of the employer's legal status. Workers paid by the day or hour are also entitled to the paid holiday. The announcement reinforces the legal right to a day of paid rest for all eligible employees on this occasion.

While the majority of workers will benefit from the holiday, the government has instructed relevant administrations and organisations to ensure the continuity of essential services. Structures operating on a shift or rotation basis are required to maintain their usual operations to guarantee service for users during the public holiday.
