Algeria's Ministry of Higher Education has confirmed that university courses for the 2026-2027 academic year will begin on 22 September 2026, aligning closely with the national school calendar and aiming to streamline campus preparations.

Algeria's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has officially set the start date for the 2026-2027 academic year, with university courses scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. The announcement provides clarity for students and institutions, as the ministry seeks to ensure a smooth transition into the new academic cycle.

In preparation, teaching and research staff are expected to return to campuses on Sunday, 13 September 2026. This advance period is intended to allow academic teams to finalize timetables, allocate teaching responsibilities, and verify the readiness of university facilities before students arrive.

Staggered Return to Facilitate Campus Readiness

The ministry's approach divides the start of the academic year into two phases. The initial week, dedicated to staff, is designed to address last-minute logistical or administrative issues that often disrupt the first days of classes. By separating staff and student arrivals, authorities aim to minimize operational disruptions and ensure that lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and seminar rooms are fully functional from day one.

Coordination with Regional University Conferences

To reinforce this process, the ministry's secretary general has instructed the presidents of regional university conferences to oversee the completion of all administrative and maintenance tasks ahead of the student intake. This directive covers both academic and infrastructure matters, with university rectors expected to resolve any outstanding issues identified during the previous year over the summer months.

University and School Calendars Now Closely Aligned

The university calendar now closely mirrors the national school schedule. Earlier in August, the government postponed the start of the school year to Monday, 21 September 2026, meaning students at all levels will return within a 24-hour window. This alignment is intended to streamline planning for families and institutions alike.

Digital Registration for New Students

The ministry also confirmed that final university registration for new baccalaureate holders from the 2026 session will take place from Wednesday, 5 August to Monday, 10 August. In line with the sector's "zero paper" digitalisation strategy, the entire process will be conducted online, including fee payment via Edahabia card or QR code, and the issuance of virtual student cards accessible on smartphones.
