The Algerian government has announced an ambitious plan to facilitate 20,000 investment projects across the country by 2029. The initiative is underpinned by a comprehensive survey of available economic land and a new strategic roadmap aimed at transforming underutilised sites into productive assets.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb chaired a high-level videoconference with regional governors on 17 August, focusing on the investment agenda as well as preparations for the 2026-2027 academic year. The meeting, held in line with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, also addressed school transport and canteen services, with several key ministers in attendance.
Five-Pillar Strategy to Unlock Economic Land
The government's roadmap is structured around five main pillars: completing the national inventory of economic land, digitising land governance, resolving legal and administrative barriers, upgrading and connecting sites to essential infrastructure, and strengthening inter-ministerial coordination. The aim is to create a national portfolio of mobilisable land, enabling both public and private sector actors to launch new projects.
Officials reviewed progress on the land survey and discussed measures to recover and legally clarify sites currently blocked or under dispute. The government's stated objective is to convert these areas into genuine economic opportunities, supporting Algeria's broader investment climate and diversification goals.
Education and Public Services Also in Focus
The meeting also reaffirmed the government's priority to ensure reliable school transport and canteen services from the first week of the new academic year, as emphasised by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Authorities were instructed to guarantee the availability and quality of these services nationwide.
For the 2026-2027 university intake, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research outlined steps to accommodate new students, including the provision of adequate teaching resources, facilities, and support services. These measures are intended to ensure a smooth start to the academic year and address the needs of Algeria's growing student population.
