Algerian authorities have dismantled a transnational narcotics network, seizing drugs and assets valued at nearly 1,000 billion centimes. The operation highlights the scale of cross-border criminal logistics and regional security risks.

Algerian security forces have executed one of the country's largest anti-narcotics operations, dismantling a transnational criminal network and seizing illicit drugs and assets with an estimated market value approaching 1,000 billion centimes. The operation, which followed months of investigation, marks a significant escalation in Algeria's efforts to combat organised crime with cross-border reach.

The investigation, led by the Service Central de Lutte contre le Trafic Illicite de Stupéfiants et des Substances Psychotropes (SCLTISSP), uncovered a sophisticated network with operational links extending beyond Algeria's borders. Authorities identified Moroccan-based drug traffickers as key organisers of logistics into western Algeria, while financial operations were coordinated through intermediaries in Dubai and France.

Record Drug Seizure and Criminal Logistics Uncovered

The operation culminated in coordinated raids across several wilayas, including Oran, Tizi Ouzou, Algiers, Blida, and Tipaza, with support from the Groupement d'Intervention Spéciale de la Police (GOSP). Authorities seized 10.4 million capsules of Prégabaline, 33.4 kilograms of cocaine, 19 vehicles (including a tanker truck and three motorcycles), and over 1.5 billion centimes in cash. Officials described the action as the most significant of its kind against an international criminal structure in Algeria to date.

Judicial Action Targets 50 Suspects Across Multiple Jurisdictions

The judicial phase is now underway, led by the prosecutor at the Sidi M'hamed tribunal's national pole for counter-terrorism and transnational organised crime. Of the 50 identified network members, 25 were apprehended in the act, including a woman and a Mauritanian national, Saidna Free. The remaining suspects, of Algerian, Moroccan, and Dutch nationality, are currently at large but have been identified. Those detained were presented to the prosecutor on 20 August 2026 and placed in pre-trial detention, marking the first step in dismantling a major trafficking corridor operating from Algeria's southern borders.

Regional Security Implications and Next Steps

This operation underscores the persistent challenge of transnational organised crime in North Africa, with logistics and financial flows spanning Morocco, Algeria, the Gulf, and Europe. The dismantling of this network is expected to disrupt established trafficking routes, but authorities caution that regional criminal alliances remain resilient. Further judicial proceedings and international cooperation will be critical in pursuing fugitives and preventing the reconstitution of similar networks.
