Fifteen Italian agricultural technology firms will visit Algiers in September 2026, aiming to accelerate Algeria's push for food sovereignty by introducing advanced equipment, digital tools, and irrigation solutions to the country's farming sector.

Algeria is set to host a major Italian industrial delegation in September 2026, as the country intensifies efforts to modernise its agricultural sector and strengthen food security. Fifteen Italian companies specialising in agricultural technology will travel to Algiers on 28-29 September, seeking to introduce advanced solutions to boost productivity and address structural challenges in Algerian farming.

The mission, organised by the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) in partnership with FederUnacoma-the association representing Italian agricultural machinery manufacturers-aims to connect Italian technology providers with Algerian public and private sector decision-makers. The initiative is designed to channel investment into technologies that can raise yields and reinforce the agricultural value chain.

Focus on Technology Transfer and Sector Priorities

The two-day programme will centre on five key areas: mechanisation and equipment for both large-scale farming and livestock, smart irrigation systems to optimise water use, digital tools for production management, development of high-quality fruit and horticultural nurseries, and modern storage infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses. The agenda includes an opening workshop, business-to-business meetings, and field visits to farms near Algiers, with simultaneous translation in French, Italian, and English to facilitate exchanges.

Algeria's Drive for Food Sovereignty and Regional Impact

Agriculture accounts for around 15% of Algeria's GDP and covers over 8.6 million hectares of usable land, making it a cornerstone of the non-hydrocarbon economy. However, ICE estimates that 70% of agricultural activity still relies on traditional methods, creating urgent demand for modern equipment and water management solutions. Improving yields in strategic crops such as cereals remains a top national priority, especially as authorities seek to develop southern lands.

This Italian mission builds on the momentum of the Italy-Algeria Business Forum held in July 2025, which laid the groundwork for deeper cooperation in agro-industry, energy, and infrastructure. ICE will cover all event logistics, offering free participation to selected companies, who must apply by 31 August 2026. The mission will proceed if at least ten firms commit to attend.
