Senior military officials from Mauritania and Senegal met in Nouakchott to explore ways to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, reflecting growing security challenges in the Sahel and West Africa. No concrete agreements were announced.

Senior military leaders from Mauritania and Senegal held talks in Nouakchott this week, focusing on ways to deepen defence and security cooperation as both countries face rising instability in the Sahel and West Africa.

The Senegalese delegation, led by General Oumar Wade, Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces, was received by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani at the presidential palace. The meeting was also attended by General Mohamed Vall Raïs Raïs, Chief of the General Staff of the Mauritanian Armed Forces, and General Mohamed Mokhtar Cheikh Menni, Chief of the President's Military Staff.

Focus on Bilateral Security Coordination

According to the Mauritanian army, the discussions centred on the current state and future prospects of military cooperation between the two countries. While the official statement did not disclose specific topics or outcomes, the talks come at a time of heightened security concerns across the region, including cross-border threats and instability in neighbouring Sahel states.

Both delegations included senior officers responsible for border regions, military attachés from the respective embassies, and commanders from various divisions and directorates. Working sessions were held at the Armed Forces Conference Centre, underlining the institutional nature of the dialogue.

No Announced Agreements, but Ongoing Dialogue

No concrete agreements or new initiatives were announced following the meetings. However, the engagement signals continued efforts by Mauritania and Senegal to coordinate on defence matters, particularly as regional security dynamics evolve. The presence of high-level military leadership from both sides highlights the importance attached to maintaining open channels for cooperation.

Further developments or formal agreements may emerge as both countries adapt to the shifting security landscape in the Sahel and West Africa.
