Mauritania's SOMELEC has restored full operations at the Toujounine and Tevrag Zeina substations, ending recent outages in Nouakchott's eastern and northern districts. Repairs included equipment replacement and emergency imports to stabilise electricity supply.
The Mauritanian electricity company SOMELEC has announced the complete restoration of service at two major substations in Nouakchott, following recent disruptions that affected large parts of the capital. The substations, located in Toujounine (East) and Tevrag Zeina (North), are now operating at full capacity, according to company director general Kharambale Lehbib.
Lehbib stated that repair teams succeeded in bringing both facilities back online after intensive technical work. All neighbourhoods connected to these substations-including Toujounine, Dar Naïm, Tarhil, and Mellah-are now receiving normal electricity supply.
Repairs Involved Equipment Replacement and Imports
The restoration process included the repair and recommissioning of 15 kV cells, as well as the deployment of backup equipment from SOMELEC's reserves. In addition, the company imported further components from abroad to ensure the substations could return to full operational status.
Lehbib emphasised that the main challenge now is to maintain stable operations under current conditions, with ongoing monitoring planned in the coming weeks.
Power Stability Remains a Priority
The rapid restoration follows a period of significant outages in Nouakchott, which had previously prompted urgent interventions by SOMELEC and the energy ministry. For context, a recent fire at the eastern substation had caused widespread power cuts, highlighting the vulnerability of the city's grid infrastructure.
SOMELEC's latest actions are intended to stabilise electricity supply for residents and businesses, with further technical upgrades under consideration to reduce future risks.
