Trade between Spain and Libya expanded sharply in the first six months of 2026, with Spanish exports to Libya more than doubling and Libyan imports to Spain rising by two-thirds, reflecting deepening economic ties.

Trade flows between Spain and Libya have accelerated in the first half of 2026, according to data released by the Spanish Embassy in Libya. Spanish exports to Libya reached €324.5 million, marking a 114.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, Libyan imports to Spain climbed by 66.8%, totalling €2,267.09 million between January and June.

This surge in bilateral trade highlights a strengthening economic relationship between the two countries, with both sides benefiting from increased commercial activity. The significant rise in Spanish exports suggests growing demand for Spanish goods and services in the Libyan market, while Libya's export growth to Spain underscores the importance of energy and commodity flows.

Direct Air Link and Economic Forum Support Trade Growth

The launch of a direct flight service by MedSky between Tripoli and Madrid on 21 April 2026 has further facilitated business and trade connections. The new route was inaugurated just ahead of the Libyan Spanish Economic Forum, held in Madrid from 23 to 24 April, which brought together business leaders and officials to discuss opportunities for deeper cooperation.

Implications for Regional Trade and Economic Integration

The rapid expansion of Spain-Libya trade reflects broader trends in Mediterranean economic integration and highlights Libya's ongoing efforts to diversify its trade partners. The development may also signal increased investor interest and improved logistical connectivity between North Africa and southern Europe. Observers will be watching for further growth in bilateral trade volumes and the potential for new joint ventures or investment agreements in the coming months.
