Expro has commenced a four-year, $380 million contract in Algeria to optimise hydrocarbon production and well management across multiple fields, marking one of its largest projects in North Africa and reinforcing Algeria's upstream investment drive.

Expro, the energy services group listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has officially begun operations under a four-year contract in Algeria valued at approximately $380 million. The agreement, awarded by a major but unnamed North African operator, focuses on optimising production and managing wells across several hydrocarbon fields. This contract is now among Expro's most significant in the North African region, reflecting Algeria's growing importance in the company's portfolio.

Scope and Strategic Importance of the Contract

According to Expro, the contract involves deploying advanced production technologies and integrated service solutions aimed at improving operational efficiency and supporting Algeria's efforts to boost hydrocarbon output. The deal covers multiple distinct projects, each requiring rapid mobilisation of equipment and technical expertise, in line with the client's priorities for safety and sustainable production. Expro notes that this award is one of its largest ever in North Africa, underlining the scale and complexity of the Algerian market.

Building on a Decade of Collaboration

Alistair Geddes, Expro's Chief Operating Officer, highlighted that the new contract builds on more than ten years of collaboration with the client. He emphasised the strength of the partnership in delivering safe and efficient production solutions, and reiterated Expro's commitment to supporting Algeria's energy ambitions. The company's systems are designed to maintain production levels, maximise facility uptime, and reduce operating costs. Geddes also pointed out that the award demonstrates Expro's ability to respond quickly to changing market conditions, describing Algeria as one of the most important energy regions in North Africa.

Timeline and Financial Impact

The contract was initially disclosed to investors in February 2026, following its award at the end of 2025, and has now entered the operational phase. This timeline illustrates the mobilisation period required for projects of this scale. Expro's financial reports show that in the fourth quarter of 2025, the Middle East and North Africa region generated $93 million in revenue, up 8% from the previous quarter, with increased well management activity in Algeria and Saudi Arabia driving the growth.

Expro's Presence and Track Record in Algeria

Expro employs around 8,500 people and operates in over 50 countries, with a 2025 revenue of $1.607 billion and a year-end order book of $2.5 billion. The company has been active in Algeria for more than a decade, notably supplying, installing, and operating two gas compression facilities at Rhourde Nouss, a major gas field. That project targeted zero flaring and achieved over 98% availability, demonstrating Expro's technical capabilities in the Algerian context. For comparison, recent developments in Algeria's regulatory and business environment, such as intensified competition in the automotive sector, have also attracted international attention, as seen in coverage of Chinese car imports reshaping Algeria's market dynamics.

Algeria's Upstream Investment Surge

The launch of Expro's contract coincides with Sonatrach's 2026-2030 investment plan, which allocates 75% of development spending to upstream exploration and production. Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi recently stated that the plan includes exploration across 66% of Algeria's mining domain, drilling around 500 exploration wells, 950 development wells, and nearly 6,300 interventions on existing wells. The Expro contract directly supports this last segment-well interventions and optimisation of producing fields-aligning with Algeria's broader strategy to increase gas output in response to rising domestic and export demand.
